Primary Group of Builders Expands Fleet to 60 Vessels for E-commerce Boom
PGB Expands Fleet to 60 Vessels for E-commerce Growth

As the Primary Group of Builders (PGB) celebrates its 75th anniversary in Cebu, the company is significantly boosting investments in its maritime logistics division, expanding its vessel fleet to enhance the movement of goods throughout the archipelago. This strategic move comes in response to the rapid growth of e-commerce and regional trade, positioning PGB as a key player in domestic cargo operations.

Fleet Expansion and Operational Scale

PGB chairman William Christopher "Wally" Liu revealed that the group now operates nearly 60 vessels, making it one of the larger privately-run domestic cargo operators in the Philippines. "We don't often publicize our operations, but we've grown substantially. Our vessel fleet is approaching 60 vessels currently," Liu stated. This expansion forms a critical component of the company's logistics network, which facilitates the transport of goods between major ports and emerging provincial markets, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Daily Cargo Volume and E-commerce Support

According to Liu, the vessels collectively handle an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 tons of cargo daily. This capacity supports diverse supply chains, ranging from commercial shipments to the swiftly expanding e-commerce sector. "Every single day, we're moving the equivalent of about 300,000 to 400,000 tons of goods," he emphasized. "If you order anything from e-commerce platforms, there's a strong likelihood we'll assist in delivering it to your doorstep. Somebody has to manage this crucial link in the supply chain."

Network Connectivity and Provincial Demand

The logistics network connects Batangas in Luzon to multiple destinations in the Visayas and Mindanao, including Panay, Negros, and Zamboanga. Additionally, the group has inaugurated a direct route from Sorsogon to Surigao, offering an alternative corridor for cargo movement between Luzon and Mindanao. Liu highlighted that this expansion mirrors the increasing demand for goods in provincial markets, which have experienced enhanced purchasing power in recent years. "Areas that were once considered remote or underdeveloped are no longer in that category," he noted. "Daily, numerous e-commerce packages are directed toward these regions."

Technical Expertise and Crew Development

The maritime business has seen steady growth over approximately 15 years, bolstered by the group's technical engineering capabilities and investments in crew development. "We leverage our technical engineering expertise to ensure vessels operate efficiently, and our human resources focus on maintaining a top-notch crew," Liu explained. However, he acknowledged challenges such as rising global fuel prices, partly due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which could elevate operating costs for shipping companies. "Fuel prices have increased... and that impacts everyone in the industry," he added.

75th Anniversary and Broader Strategic Initiatives

Marking its 75th year, PGB board member Beatrice Anne Liu announced that the company is pursuing various initiatives beyond maritime logistics. These include new vessel acquisitions, real estate partnerships, home investment programs, lifestyle promotions, and expanded human capital and foundation projects. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy to generate long-term social and economic impact.

Construction Cluster Expansion

In addition to logistics, PGB continues to advance strategic business initiatives across its industries. In June, its construction arm, Primary Structures, will lead the launch of a Construction Cluster integrated operations program. This initiative will combine construction, materials, and equipment services under a unified platform, aiming to streamline operations. It will also expand the group's construction services beyond the Visayas and Mindanao to Luzon, bringing construction solutions to more markets nationwide.
