DMW Helps Stranded OFWs After 7.8 Quake Hits General Santos

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has pledged immediate assistance to stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in General Santos City following the temporary closure of the General Santos International Airport due to a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8, 2026.

DMW Assurance to Affected OFWs

The DMW stated, "DMW is ready to assist OFWs affected by cancellation of flights to and from General Santos City airport." The agency emphasized that it has intensified monitoring to identify and support OFWs and their families in the affected areas.

Airport Operations Suspended

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) suspended all airport activities in General Santos after the earthquake, leading to the cancellation of 63 flights from June 8 to 11. The airport itself sustained damage, as shown in photos released by the Department of Transportation.

Government Reassures OFWs

The DMW advised OFWs from Mindanao that their families affected by the earthquake are being taken care of. "To our compatriots abroad, do not worry, because the government is focused on the safety of your loved ones," the department said in a statement.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Sarangani province on Monday morning and was felt in other parts of Mindanao. The DMW continues to coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure the welfare of OFWs and their families.
