NIA Establishes Al-Ammar Irrigators Association in Basilan to Boost Farm Productivity

The National Irrigation Administration, through its regional sub-office for Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, has taken a significant step to enhance agricultural development in Lamitan City, Basilan province. On Monday, February 16, 2026, NIA facilitated the formation of the Al-Ammar Irrigators Association in Sitio Tinog, Ubit village, marking a pivotal move to unite local farmers and improve irrigation systems.

Uniting Farmers for Sustainable Irrigation

The newly established association comprises 30 farmers from the area, who have come together under the leadership of elected president Omar Baul. This initiative aims to foster collaboration among agricultural stakeholders, ensuring efficient water management and the proper operation of irrigation facilities. By organizing into a formal group, farmers can better coordinate with NIA to address irrigation challenges and implement development projects.

Omar Baul has pledged to work closely with NIA, emphasizing the association's commitment to maintaining future irrigation infrastructure and supporting programs that benefit member-farmers directly. His leadership focuses on responsible water usage and enhancing agricultural productivity through collective efforts.

NIA's Regional Efforts and Support

The establishment was facilitated by Irrigation Development Officers Jay Soriano and Adonis Jhon Amil from NIA's Zambasulta regional sub-office. This event is part of NIA's broader strategy to organize and strengthen irrigators associations across the region, promoting sustainable irrigation services and agricultural growth.

In a statement, NIA-Zamboanga Peninsula highlighted that these initiatives are designed to provide farmers with the necessary tools and guidance to improve their livelihoods. By empowering local associations, NIA aims to ensure that irrigation development aligns with community needs, ultimately boosting food security and economic stability in rural areas.

The Al-Ammar Irrigators Association represents a key milestone in NIA's ongoing efforts to enhance irrigation infrastructure and support the agricultural sector in Basilan and beyond.
