The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has officially enforced a price freeze on basic necessities and prime commodities, a measure set to remain in effect until May 10, 2026. This decisive action aims to stabilize prices and shield consumers from economic pressures, particularly in light of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
Consumer Vigilance Encouraged
In a recent statement, Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque called on the public to actively report any retailers found selling goods above the suggested retail prices (SRPs). The DTI emphasized that this consumer cooperation is crucial for enforcing the price controls effectively and maintaining market fairness.
Scope of the Price Freeze
The price freeze encompasses a wide range of essential items, ensuring affordability for everyday needs. Covered products include canned sardines, processed milk, bread, coffee, locally manufactured instant noodles, bottled water, laundry soap, candles, salt, canned meat, condiments, and toilet soap. All these items are subject to strict SRPs, which retailers must adhere to without exception.
Supply Assurance and Market Monitoring
Secretary Roque reassured the public that current supplies of these basic goods remain sufficient, discouraging any panic buying. To uphold this stability, the DTI is conducting daily market monitoring initiatives. These efforts are designed to verify both the availability and affordability of commodities, ensuring that households have consistent access to necessities.
Government Coordination and Oversight
Under the government’s UPLIFT framework—a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach—the DTI has intensified its oversight to mitigate the impact of global disruptions on Filipino families. The agency is coordinating closely with manufacturers and retailers to prevent profiteering and unauthorized price increases. This collaborative strategy aims to foster a transparent and equitable market environment.
Access to Official Information
The DTI reminded consumers that official SRP bulletins are readily accessible through multiple channels. These include physical postings in stores, updates on the DTI website, and announcements via its social media platforms. By providing this information, the agency seeks to empower the public with the knowledge needed to make informed purchasing decisions and hold retailers accountable.
This price freeze initiative, driven by a directive from Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., underscores the government’s commitment to consumer protection and economic resilience during challenging times.
