DTI Enforces Price Freeze on Basic Necessities Until April 30, 2026

In a significant move to safeguard Filipino consumers, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has officially declared that there will be no price increases for basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs) until April 30, 2026. This decision follows a crucial meeting convened by DTI Secretary Cristina Roque on April 6, 2026, reinforcing the government's commitment to price stability amid ongoing global economic pressures.

Ground-Level Monitoring and Industry Cooperation

Secretary Roque recently led monitoring and inspection efforts at a mall in Mabolo, Cebu City, on November 13, 2025, verifying that supermarket prices for essential goods were within prescribed levels and often lower than suggested retail prices (SRPs). This hands-on approach underscores the DTI's proactive stance in ensuring compliance and transparency across retail outlets nationwide.

The renewed price freeze agreement covers a wide range of products, including canned sardines, processed milk, bread, coffee, locally-manufactured instant noodles, bottled water, laundry soap, candles, salt, canned meat, condiments, and toilet soap. Secretary Roque emphasized that this initiative reflects strong industry support, with major manufacturers pledging to maintain stable prices to protect consumers from supply chain disruptions and rising fuel costs.

Assurances and Enforcement Mechanisms

In a statement, Secretary Roque assured the public, "We want to assure Filipino consumers that there will be no price increase for necessities and prime commodities until April 30, and we do not expect any shortage of supply in the coming weeks. There is no need for panic buying, as supply remains sufficient." She highlighted the DTI's daily market monitoring efforts to ensure availability and affordability of basic goods.

The DTI is intensifying its oversight as part of the broader UPLIFT framework, adopting a whole-of-government approach to support Filipino families. While no enforcement actions have been required so far, the department is fully prepared to issue Letters of Inquiry or Notices of Violation to businesses found selling above SRP levels. Strict penalties will be imposed on entities engaged in illegal practices such as hoarding or profiteering, ensuring fair market conditions.

Key Industry Players and Consumer Guidance

Among the companies that have agreed to maintain prices are Alaska Milk Corporation, Century Pacific Food, Inc., Nestlé Philippines, Inc., Universal Robina Corporation (URC), and Procter & Gamble Philippines, along with over a dozen other major manufacturers. This collective effort aims to balance enterprise sustainability with consumer protection under the Bagong Pilipinas initiative.

To promote price transparency, the DTI has made the official SRP bulletin widely accessible through in-store postings in supermarkets and groceries across the country, as well as online via the DTI website and official social media platforms. This measure empowers consumers to make informed purchasing decisions and holds retailers accountable for adherence to regulated prices.

With sustained coordination between government agencies, industry partners, and ground-level enforcement, the DTI remains focused on ensuring reasonable prices and sufficient supply, ultimately fostering a stable economic environment for all Filipinos.
