Lapu-Lapu City's Historic Kadaugan sa Mactan to Proceed Despite Energy Crisis, Sadsad Festival Canceled

In a move to balance tradition with practicality, Lapu-Lapu City officials have confirmed that the 505th Kadaugan sa Mactan celebration will proceed as scheduled, despite the ongoing energy crisis triggered by tensions in the Middle East. However, the Sadsad sa Kadaugan street dancing competition has been canceled to conserve resources, highlighting the city's adaptive response to global challenges.

Key Announcements and Guest of Honor

Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King Chan announced on Monday, April 6, 2026, during the City Government's regular flag-raising ceremony that Department of Education Secretary Edgardo "Sonny" Angara will serve as the guest of honor for this historic event. The mayor assured the public that the reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, a cornerstone of the festivities, will occur as planned, emphasizing the city's commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

Event Adjustments and Continuations

City Tourism Office head Garry Lao detailed the adjustments, noting that the Sadsad Festival is the only major event canceled due to the crisis. In Cebuano, Lao explained, "The barangays understood since organizing it would require paying for fuel in fetching dancers and participants." This festival typically features four categories: Best in Ritual Showdown, Best in Street Dance, Best in Reyna Bulakna, and Best in Datu Lapu-lapu.

Despite this cancellation, other activities will continue. The "Lapu-Lapu Got Talent" competition will be hosted, and nightly events will run through April 27. The City Government will provide the stage, sound, lighting, and venue without incurring additional expenses, ensuring cost-effective management.

Festival Highlights and Participation

The grand opening on Friday, April 10, showcased stalls, hotels, and restaurants at the Liberty Shrine, with the Provincial Government participating for the first time with a booth. Bisaya artists are expected to perform, highlighting local talent while keeping expenses manageable.

In a nod to continuity, vlogging couple Shaun Pelayo and Crissa "Habibi" Liaging will reprise their roles as Datu Lapulapu and Reyna Bulakna for the second consecutive year. Lao praised their reliability and execution of director's instructions. Additionally, Belgian-Filipino model Kevin Lahousse will continue to portray Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the reenactment.

This year's Kadaugan sa Mactan demonstrates Lapu-Lapu City's resilience, blending cultural celebration with prudent resource management amid external pressures.
