Samal Island Welcomes Nearly 48,000 Visitors During Holy Week 2026
The Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) has reported a significant influx of tourists during the Holy Week period in 2026, with official data revealing a total of 47,966 visitor arrivals. This robust surge highlights the island's enduring appeal as a premier beach and resort destination in Mindanao, particularly during peak holiday seasons when Filipinos capitalize on extended breaks for travel.
Detailed Breakdown of Tourist Arrivals
According to the official "Samal Island Tourist Arrival Report" covering April 2 to 5, 2026, the vast majority of travelers were domestic tourists, accounting for 47,565 arrivals. Foreign visitors numbered 381, while overseas Filipinos made up 20 of the total. This distribution underscores the island's heavy reliance on local tourism, which drives economic activity during key periods.
Visitor patterns further indicated that most tourists opted for overnight stays, with 33,671 individuals recorded in various accommodations such as beach resorts and inland lodging facilities. In contrast, 14,295 were same-day visitors, reflecting a steady stream of short-term travelers who visited the island without extended stays. The data was meticulously collected from registered resorts, travel and tour operators, and dive shops, demonstrating enhanced monitoring efforts by the local government to accurately track tourism activity.
Maritime Safety and Security Measures
Complementing the tourist surge, maritime authorities reported a safe and orderly Holy Week travel period. The Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM), in coordination with partner agencies, recorded zero maritime casualties during the observance from March 28 to April 5, 2026, under OPLAN Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa 2026.
During this period, CGDSEM assisted a total of 269,155 passengers across various ports in the region. Authorities conducted inspections on 1,354 vessels, monitored 65,147 rolling cargoes, and ensured that 1,417 motorbancas complied with established safety standards. To support these operations, 946 personnel were deployed across ports and coastal areas to oversee safety and security measures.
Officials emphasized that this outcome highlights the agency's firm commitment to maritime safety through strict enforcement of regulations, proactive monitoring, and strong coordination with other government units.
Peaceful Observance and Regional Security
Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office-Davao Region (PRO-Davao) reported a generally peaceful Holy Week observance, with no untoward incidents recorded across the region. The absence of major security concerns further contributed to the smooth flow of tourists and travelers during one of the busiest periods of the year, reinforcing Samal Island's reputation as a secure and accessible destination.
The sustained influx of visitors affirms Samal Island's position as a leading tourism hub in Mindanao, known for its natural attractions and proximity to Davao City. This successful Holy Week period not only boosts local economies but also sets a positive precedent for future holiday seasons.
