Rotary Club Transforms Barangay Ilang with Covered Court and Christmas Celebration
As a new member of Rotary, I have discovered that community projects emerge continuously, each one reinforcing my deepest passion: making tangible differences in people's lives through meaningful assistance. Being an educator, artist, and writer, I firmly hold that education possesses the transformative power to alter destinies, influencing how young minds perceive the world and ultimately contribute to society.
Groundbreaking Ceremony for a Vital Community Structure
On December 10, 2025, the Rotary Club of South Davao journeyed to Barangay Ilang, where I enthusiastically participated, contributing 100 books to the initiative. The event marked the commencement of a straightforward yet profoundly significant endeavor: constructing a covered roof to link the two existing daycare facilities in the barangay.
Although this structure might appear modest, its implications are substantial. The roof will ensure safe passage for children between buildings, shielding them from harsh sunlight and rainfall. Additionally, it will function as a versatile area for activities and a shaded waiting zone where mothers can relax comfortably while their children attend classes. Sometimes, dignity manifests in the simple provision of shade.
A Festive Christmas Party with Practical Gifts
The day was further enriched by a Christmas celebration for the 92 daycare attendees. We distributed practical presents, including a pajama set for each child, accompanied by apples and other food items. The festivities featured games for the children, as well as engaging activities for parents and teachers, emphasizing that joy is most fulfilling when shared collectively.
Prior to commencing the events, bread was served for breakfast. While organizing the food and prizes, I conversed with the children about Santa Claus, clarifying that he is not the red-suited figure commonly depicted. Instead, I shared the historical account of St. Nicholas, a bishop of the Christian faith who was unmarried, of Greek origin from Antioch, and traveled by boat rather than reindeer.
The children erupted in laughter upon hearing this, but the core message resonated deeply: St. Nicholas exemplified generosity and a love for aiding children. This narrative aimed to instill the enduring values of kindness and benevolence during the holiday season.
Long-Term Aspirations for Community Growth
Departing from Barangay Ilang, I harbored hopes that this generous undertaking—a simple covered shed—would evolve into a catalyst for broader positive change. Envisioning happier, healthier students who may one day emerge as leaders, visionaries, and benefactors themselves, the project symbolizes a seed planted for future community development and empowerment.
