The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) College Scholarship Program offers financial support to qualified dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). The program aims to help OFW families access higher education for their children.
Scholarship Benefits
Selected scholars receive up to PHP 60,000 per school year to cover tuition, fees, and other educational expenses. The grant is renewable each year, provided the scholar maintains satisfactory academic performance.
According to OWWA, the scholarship covers a maximum of four years for undergraduate degrees. The amount is directly remitted to the educational institution.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be dependents of active OWWA member OFWs. The dependent must be a college freshman or sophomore enrolled in a Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-recognized course. The family income should not exceed PHP 300,000 annually.
- Must be a Filipino citizen
- Must have a grade point average of at least 85% or its equivalent
- Must not be a recipient of other government scholarships
Application Process
Interested applicants can apply through OWWA regional offices or online via the OWWA website. The application period typically opens in June and closes in August. Required documents include the OFW's OWWA membership certificate, proof of income, and the applicant's report card.
OWWA emphasizes that incomplete applications will not be processed. Applicants are advised to submit all requirements on time.
Impact on OFW Families
The scholarship program has helped thousands of OFW dependents pursue college degrees. Many beneficiaries have graduated and secured jobs, improving their families' economic status. OWWA continues to expand the program to reach more qualified applicants.
