Bird Flu Alert: PEF Heightens Biosecurity Near Cotabato

DAVAO CITY - The Pampenao Emergency Fund (PEF) has escalated its biosecurity alert level following the laboratory confirmation of an avian influenza (bird flu) case in a nearby Cotabato municipality, raising concerns among local poultry farmers and health authorities.

The alarming discovery was made in Barangay Poblacion, M'lang, Cotabato, where tests conducted by the Department of Agriculture Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (DA-RADDL) confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.

Immediate Response Measures

In response to the confirmed case, PEF has activated enhanced biosecurity protocols across the region. Dr. Kenette G. Alcober, PEF's dedicated coordinator, announced the implementation of critical preventive measures:

  • Strict monitoring and surveillance of poultry farms within the 1-kilometer radius of the affected area
  • Enhanced disinfection procedures for all poultry facilities and transportation vehicles
  • Temporary movement restrictions on live birds and poultry products
  • Intensified information campaigns for local farmers about biosecurity practices

Protecting the Poultry Industry

The swift action comes as authorities work to prevent potential economic damage to the region's thriving poultry sector. "We are taking all necessary precautions to contain the situation and protect our local poultry industry," emphasized Dr. Alcober during a press briefing.

Local farmers have been advised to immediately report any unusual bird mortalities or symptoms of illness in their flocks. Common signs of avian influenza include:

  1. Sudden death without clinical signs
  2. Decreased egg production
  3. Swelling of the head and eyelids
  4. Purple discoloration of wattles and combs

Public Health Assurance

Health authorities have reassured the public that proper cooking destroys the avian influenza virus, making properly prepared poultry products safe for consumption. No human cases have been reported in connection with this outbreak.

The PEF continues to coordinate with national and local government agencies to implement comprehensive containment strategies and protect both animal and human health in the region.
