Cebu Province Investigates Improper Hospital Waste Dumping in Bogo City

Health officials in Cebu Province have initiated an investigation into the improper disposal of hospital waste, commonly known as medical waste, in Bogo City. This action follows alarming reports of hazardous materials being found scattered along a roadside, raising significant public health concerns.

Discovery of Medical Waste in Barangay Cogon

During a media interview on Monday, April 13, 2026, Cebu Province Health Consultant Elisse Nicole Catalan confirmed that the province is conducting a thorough examination of the waste discovered in Barangay Cogon, Bogo City. According to a report from SunStar Cebu published on Sunday, April 12, residents and barangay officials were alarmed after finding used medical waste, including syringes and clinic equipment, improperly discarded along the road.

The waste was first discovered on Saturday, April 11, during a road-clearing operation. It is believed to have originated from health facilities such as clinics or laboratories in the area. Barangay Captain Allain Ree Florita Torion warned of the health risks posed by this improper disposal and emphasized that their barangay should not be treated as a dumping site.

Immediate Response and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the incident, the area was cleaned on the same day following advice from the City Health Office. However, the responsible party has not yet been identified, as the CCTV cameras in the vicinity were reportedly damaged at the time of the incident. Catalan clarified that waste from province-managed hospitals is typically transported and processed by a third-party contractor, Cleanaway Philippines, suggesting that the dumped materials may have come from other sources.

The investigation aims to determine the origin of the waste and hold those accountable for the improper disposal. Health officials are urging the public to report any similar incidents to prevent future risks to community health and safety.
