Visiting Japanese experts assisting Philippine authorities have reported meaningful progress in addressing the aftermath of a massive fire at a landfill facility in Navotas that began in early April.
Mission Completion
The Japanese Embassy in Manila announced on Thursday that the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Expert Team, deployed to the Philippines on April 23, has concluded its nearly week-long assessment. The team submitted an official report to the concerned agencies.
Based on consultations with relevant agencies and onsite inspections, the JDR Team assessed that meaningful progress has been achieved in managing the situation, the embassy stated.
Strengthened Bilateral Ties
The embassy emphasized that this collaboration underscores the strong partnership, mutual trust, and solidarity between Japan and the Philippines. We sincerely hope for a swift resolution of the situation, it added.
Fire Incident Details
The fire erupted on April 10 at the 41-hectare landfill, raising significant public health concerns due to its scale and potential impact on Navotas City and nearby Metro Manila communities. Toxic smoke from the blaze forced evacuations in adjacent areas, including Obando, Bulacan.
Response and Deployment
Japan deployed the JDR team at the request of the Philippine government to support ongoing response efforts at the site. The team's work involved close coordination with local authorities to assess and mitigate the fire's effects.
The completion of the assessment marks a key step in the recovery process, with the submitted report expected to guide further actions by Philippine agencies.
