Lapu-Lapu Mayor Advocates for Regional Solid Waste Management Solutions

During the FY 2027 Regional Budget Review held at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu on Thursday, February 12, 2026, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Cindi King-Chan highlighted the critical need for immediate and sustainable regional solutions to the escalating waste problem. Mayor Chan participated in the Joint Executive Committee and Advisory Committee Consultation Meeting, alongside the Technical Budget Review for FY 2027 Budget Proposals from Regional Line Agencies (RLAs) and State Universities and Colleges (SUCs).

Prioritizing Urban Development and Environmental Concerns

In her presentation, Mayor Cindi outlined key priorities for the city's development, with a strong focus on proposed regional solid waste management strategies. She stressed the urgent necessity for a long-term approach to waste handling, pointing out that increasing waste volumes, limited landfill capacity, and rising transportation costs are posing significant environmental and financial risks to local government units (LGUs) across the region.

Proposed Initiatives for Sustainable Waste Management

Mayor Chan suggested that the Regional Development Council (RDC) explore several initiatives to address these challenges. These include establishing a Regional Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility, conducting feasibility studies on waste-to-energy solutions, creating shared sanitary landfills, and strengthening inter-LGU waste diversion programs. She emphasized that waste management is no longer just a local concern but has evolved into a regional environmental and public health issue requiring collaborative and strategic action.

By advocating for these measures, Mayor Chan aims to foster a unified regional response to mitigate the adverse effects of waste accumulation, ensuring better environmental protection and financial sustainability for all involved municipalities.
