The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has successfully concluded a significant desilting and widening project in Zamboanga Sibugay province, marking a crucial step forward for local agricultural productivity. This initiative directly supports farming communities by enhancing water management infrastructure.
Completed Works in Gandiangan Village
In Gandiangan village, Imelda, the NIA Zamboanga Sibugay Irrigation Management Office (ZSIMO) finalized desilting and widening operations along Mine 4 Creek, which is part of the Gandiangan Communal Irrigation System. The project, carried out from March 10 to 16, 2026, involved clearing 590 meters of the creek to improve water conveyance and ensure efficient flow within the irrigation network.
This effort has provided direct benefits to 25 farmer-beneficiaries under the Gandiangan-Imelda Irrigators Association, who cultivate approximately 38 hectares of agricultural land. By removing accumulated silt, the NIA aims to prevent water distribution hindrances and maintain optimal irrigation conditions, which are vital for crop growth and yield stability.
Ongoing Operations in Salinding Village
Simultaneously, the NIA-ZSIMO is actively engaged in desilting and clearing operations along the drainage canal of the Imelda Irrigation Project in Salinding village, Siay. This ongoing activity focuses on eliminating silt and obstructions to restore the canal's carrying capacity and enhance overall drainage performance.
Once completed, these works are expected to benefit 66 farmer-beneficiaries under the Salinding Irrigators’ Association, Incorporated, who farm about 139 hectares of land. The improvements will contribute to more stable and reliable irrigation, preventing water stagnation and ensuring efficient water movement across service areas.
Commitment to Irrigation Management
The desilting operations form part of NIA-ZSIMO's continuous field efforts to maintain and improve irrigation facilities in Zamboanga Sibugay. These sustained maintenance interventions underscore the agency's dedication to efficient irrigation management and strengthened support for farming communities.
By addressing siltation issues proactively, the NIA helps safeguard agricultural livelihoods, promote sustainable water use, and boost local food production. This project highlights the importance of infrastructure upkeep in rural development and environmental stewardship.
