The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas clarified that Tropical Cyclone No. 2, currently affecting other parts of the country, has no direct impact on the Visayas region, including Cebu. However, the southwest monsoon, or habagat, continues to bring rainy weather across Central Visayas.
Monsoon Rains Prevail Despite Distant Cyclone
In a phone interview on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Mark Gales explained that even though the typhoon is far from the region, the southwest monsoon is being enhanced by the cyclone, resulting in persistent bad weather.
“So far, there is no direct effect from the storm in the Visayas. However, the southwest monsoon is continuously being pulled by the cyclone, and this is what is currently affecting the region,” Gales said.
Rainfall Attribution to Southwest Monsoon
Gales emphasized that the intermittent rains experienced in the region are solely due to the habagat and not from the direct influence of the tropical cyclone. The weather specialist advised residents to remain cautious as monsoon rains may cause localized flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Pagasa Visayas continues to monitor the weather situation and will provide updates as necessary. The public is urged to stay informed through official Pagasa channels.
