Cebu Vice Governor Advocates for Electric Taxi Implementation in Metro Cebu
In a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility, Cebu Vice Governor Glenn Anthony Soco has publicly declared his firm support for the introduction of electric taxis (e-taxis) across Metro Cebu. This endorsement comes as the Cebu Provincial Board (PB) prepares to scrutinize the operations of Green and Smart Mobility (GSM), a Vietnam-based e-taxi provider currently operating under a temporary permit in the region.
Clarifying the Purpose of the Inquiry Resolution
During an interview on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Vice Governor Soco emphasized that the upcoming resolution of inquiry, scheduled for the next session, is not intended as opposition but rather as a means to seek clarity on the rollout process. "This is merely a resolution of inquiry for the upcoming session. It is for clarifications. I do not want to preempt the concerns of Board Member Seno," Soco stated, referring to Board Member Nilo Seno of Mandaue City.
Board Member Seno, who serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Traffic and Transportation, is expected to provide detailed explanations regarding issues arising from consultations between local taxi operators and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 7, held on January 5.
Environmental and Traffic Benefits Highlighted
Vice Governor Soco highlighted that modern transportation systems like e-taxis offer substantial advantages not only for the environment but also in addressing the worsening traffic congestion in Metro Cebu. He pointed out that the comfort and convenience of e-taxis could attract car owners to opt for public transport, thereby reducing vehicle numbers on the roads.
"There's a perspective that needs to be appreciated because having this kind of transport system would also entice those who own cars to take public transport, given worsening traffic, the introduction of paid parking fees, and the convenience it offers," Soco elaborated, underscoring the multifaceted benefits of adopting such technologies.
Upcoming Provincial Board Hearing
The Provincial Board has scheduled a hearing for Monday, February 9, where officials from GSM and the leadership of LTFRB 7 will be invited to participate. The primary objective of this meeting is to examine the legality and operational framework of the e-taxi service in Cebu, ensuring that public interests and those of local transport operators are adequately protected.
This initiative stems from a floor resolution introduced by Board Member Seno on February 2, aimed at addressing all doubts and questions surrounding the new transportation system. The resolution seeks to foster transparency and accountability in the implementation process, aligning with broader goals of sustainable development and urban planning.
As Cebu continues to grapple with traffic challenges and environmental concerns, the push for e-taxis represents a proactive step towards integrating green technology into the province's transportation infrastructure, potentially setting a precedent for other regions in the Philippines.
