Consolacion Mayor Enforces Strict Waste Limits for Metro Cebu Cities
In a decisive move to address growing environmental concerns, Mayor Teresa "Nene" Alegado of Consolacion has implemented stringent daily waste limits for neighboring cities in Metro Cebu. This action comes in response to the closure of the Binaliw landfill and fears of overloading the local waste facility.
New Waste Allocation and Capacity Details
During a forum held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Mayor Alegado announced that Consolacion will now accept a maximum of 300 tons of waste per day from Cebu City, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu at the Asian Energy landfill in Barangay Polog. This landfill has a total daily capacity of 600 tons, with specific allocations set as follows:
- Cebu City is allotted 100 to 150 tons per day.
- Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue are each allocated 100 tons per day.
Consolacion itself generates approximately 80 to 85 metric tons of waste daily, adding to the overall load. "Due to the large volume of waste arriving from various cities, we must clearly define our limits," Alegado emphasized, highlighting the need for structured waste management.
Distinct Features and Operational Concerns
Mayor Alegado clarified that the Consolacion facility differs from the Binaliw landfill, as it is a recycling landfill rather than a sanitary one. Currently, three out of fifteen cells have been in use for over five years, but the landfill is expected to remain operational for several more years. However, Alegado expressed concerns over the lack of direct engagement from Cebu City and Mandaue with the local government of Consolacion, noting that these cities have been dealing directly with the private landfill operator.
While Consolacion is willing to assist amid the waste crisis triggered by the Binaliw trash slide on January 8, which forced Cebu City to close its primary disposal site, the mayor stressed the importance of protecting the town's capacity and the health of its residents from environmental risks. "We must balance helping our neighbors with safeguarding our own community's well-being," she added.
Guidelines and Future Implications
To ensure compliance with safety and operational standards, the Alegado administration has issued guidelines for waste transportation and disposal. The Asian Energy landfill has become a critical waste disposal site for Metro Cebu following the Binaliw incident, underscoring the urgency of these new measures. This policy aims to foster sustainable waste management practices and prevent future environmental hazards in the region.
