Sidewalk Crisis in Metro Cebu: A Battle for Pedestrian Safety and Respect

In Metro Cebu, the chaos on the roads has escalated to alarming levels, particularly during rush hours. This is no longer just bumper-to-bumper traffic; it resembles a war zone on the streets. Motorcycles weave dangerously between lanes, cutting through any available space, and some riders, without shame, even ascend onto sidewalks. Yes, sidewalks themselves. Recently, I narrowly avoided being hit while walking toward SunStar—just one step away from a potential accident.

What Does This Mean for Our Community?

For many drivers, their haste seems to outweigh the value of human life. Sidewalks, designated as safe zones for pedestrians, are being transformed into shortcuts. The space meant for walkers is being stolen. This goes beyond simple law violations; it reflects a profound lack of discipline and respect for life.

I confronted one driver because if such behavior is ignored, it becomes habitual. If it becomes habitual, it normalizes, putting everyone at risk. Fortunately, some riders have stopped ascending sidewalks, but how long can we rely on mere luck?

The Reality of Sidewalk Infrastructure in Metro Cebu

Truthfully, only a few roads in Metro Cebu have sidewalks. Most lack them entirely. Where they do exist, they are often narrow and cluttered with obstacles like poles, carts, parked vehicles, and other barriers. When two people meet, they must compete for space. Imagine the challenges for children, the elderly, or persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Envisioning a Safer Future

Consider if our streets had proper, wide sidewalks. More people would be encouraged to walk, leading to healthier communities and safer environments. However, the current message from our roads is clear: avoid walking because it is dangerous. Just ride instead. With each ride taken out of fear, the traffic we complain about worsens.

Sidewalks are not luxuries or decorations; they are necessities. They are integral to safety, discipline, and respecting pedestrian rights. Local government units (LGUs) must strive to install proper, wide, and well-maintained sidewalks. Moreover, they must ensure these spaces remain free from obstacles, motorcycle encroachments, and misuse as parking lots, stores, or even makeshift sleeping areas at night.

A Call to Action for Barangays and Communities

It is time for barangays to act within their jurisdictions. Enforce the laws, reprimand abusers, and protect pedestrians. If sidewalks themselves are no longer safe, where can we walk without risking our lives on the roads?
