10 rescued after pumpboat capsizes off Sulpa Island

All 10 passengers and the captain of a motorbanca were rescued after their pumpboat capsized near Sulpa Island, off Olango Island, on Monday, June 22, 2026.

Incident Details

The pumpboat encountered large waves that caused the engine to fail at around 5:50 p.m., according to a report. The passengers were en route to Pangan-an Island to attend a wedding on Tuesday, June 23.

Upon receiving the report, the Coast Guard Clearing Outpost Marigondon, along with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), CENRO-Coastal Resource Management, Philippine Red Cross, and Marigondon-BDRRMO, quickly responded to assess the situation.

Rescue Operation

The Search and Rescue (SAR) Team, CENRO-Coastal Resource Management, and TagaDagat Search and Rescue conducted the rescue of the passengers and towed the capsized motorbanca from Sulpa Island to Marigondon Port, arriving at 8:06 p.m.

The passengers, all from Barangay Subabasbas, were identified as: Pio Pogoy, 64; Jexter Tabasa, 30; Niño Tabasa, 26; Reymart Tabasa, 21; Peter Tabasa, 19; Rica Tampus, 16; Kevin Tabasa, 14; Urie John Tabasa, 15; and Cristobal Adaza, 20. Also on board was Jorge Udto, 54, from Pangan-an Island, who owned and captained the motorized banca.
