Converge Ramps Up Electric Vehicle Adoption Amid Global Fuel Crisis
Leading fiber broadband and technology provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc. is intensifying its efforts to green its corporate vehicle fleet, aiming to bolster resilience against volatile oil prices and supply disruptions. The company is accelerating its adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of a broader sustainability commitment to operate 20 percent of its fleet and contractor vehicles with electric and hybrid units by 2030.
Doubling EV Inventory for Enhanced Field Operations
Converge is currently in the process of adding over 100 new electric vehicles, effectively doubling its existing EV inventory. These additional units will primarily support field operations, including installation, maintenance, and repair services for subscribers in Metro Manila. Currently, the company maintains over 120 units of purely battery-powered and hybrid electric vehicles, which facilitate on-ground repair and sales activities across the metropolitan area.
Sustainability and Strategic Risk Management
According to Laurice Esteban-Tuason, Corporate Sustainability Officer at Converge, the shift towards electric-powered cars aligns with the company's carbon footprint reduction goals. She emphasized that the ongoing oil supply crisis underscores the importance of sustainability initiatives that decrease dependence on fossil fuels. "At Converge, we have been expanding our use of alternative energy sources for our data centers and gradually electrifying our service vehicles, as part of our long-term effort to reduce our carbon emissions," Esteban-Tuason stated.
She added that this move also serves as a strategic approach to managing operational risks. "Given the country's vulnerability to oil supply constraints and price shocks, diversifying our energy mix will be more beneficial, especially in terms of cost, energy efficiency, and environmental impact." The adoption of EVs is expected to lead to more consistent and reduced operating costs, providing a buffer against fuel price fluctuations driven by global market instability.
Supporting Sustainable Mobility Initiatives
Beyond fleet expansion, Converge is promoting the use of hybrid and electric vehicles through a car subsidy program for eligible employees, reinforcing its sustainability efforts. Additionally, the company has installed an EV charging station at its headquarters in Pasig to support the sustainable mobility of its battery-powered service vehicles. Looking forward, Converge plans to activate more charging stations at its other offices throughout Metro Manila, further facilitating the transition to greener transportation solutions.
