Medical Waste Illegally Dumped in Bogo City Raises Health Alarms
In a concerning incident, medical waste including syringes and suspected clinical apparatus was discovered illegally dumped along a roadside in Barangay Cogon, Bogo City, sparking significant health and safety concerns among local residents and authorities.
Barangay Captain Issues Urgent Warning
Barangay Cogon Captain Allain Ree Florita Torion issued a public statement on Saturday, April 11, 2026, highlighting the severe risks associated with such improper disposal. Torion emphasized that the waste likely originated from clinics or medical facilities and urged those responsible to adopt proper disposal methods immediately.
"This is alarming," Torion stated. "This is for clinics using apparatus like this. I am pleading with you to dispose of your used syringes, any apparatus, or any means that can cause harm to the people. Our Barangay is not a dumping ground for your waste."
Torion added, "Please dispose of your waste properly."
Discovery During Road Clearing Activity
The incident came to light during a routine road clearing activity conducted by barangay personnel. Scattered waste materials were found in an interior area, with initial observations indicating the presence of white plastic apparatus suspected to be linked to contraceptive implants or similar medical procedures. Authorities believe the medical waste may have come from maternity clinics or laboratory facilities.
Investigation Hindered by Non-Operational CCTV
Compounding the issue, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area remain non-operational after being damaged by a magnitude-6.9 earthquake that affected northern Cebu. This has left authorities with no leads as of this writing, hampering efforts to identify those responsible for the illegal dumping.
Immediate Cleanup and Ongoing Inquiries
The medical waste was promptly cleared on Saturday by authorities following advice from the City Health Office, which recommended immediate removal to mitigate health risks. SunStar Cebu has reached out to the City Environment and Natural Resources Office for further details, but no response has been received as of press time.
This incident underscores the critical need for proper medical waste management in the community to prevent potential health hazards and environmental contamination.
