The Department of Education (DepEd) has assured that students at San Jose National High School (SJNHS) in Tacloban City are safe and that flexible learning will be implemented when classes resume on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Background of the Incident
The assurance comes after the tragic mass shooting on June 22, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of three students and injuries to 20 others. DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the need to balance continuing education with the recovery of those affected.
“President Bongbong Marcos has been very clear that our schools must be sanctuaries, not places of anxiety, which is why we are systematic in our approach — combining strict infrastructure audits with compassionate learner protection,” Angara said in a statement.
Enhanced Security Measures
Security at the school has been significantly strengthened. Measures include increased police visibility, additional closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, walk-through metal detectors, and an extended perimeter fence. The classroom where the incident occurred has been closed and repurposed as an office.
Flexible Learning Implementation
DepEd will implement flexible learning options to accommodate students who may still be traumatized or unable to attend in-person classes. The department aims to ensure that all students can continue their education while prioritizing their mental and emotional well-being.
