PNP Escalates Security Measures in Bangsamoro After Fatal Encounter with Terrorist Group

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has heightened its alert level throughout the Bangsamoro region in response to a bloody confrontation with members of the Dawlah Islamiyah-Maute Group (DI-MG) in Lanao del Sur, which left 10 suspected terrorists dead. In a statement issued on Sunday, April 19, 2026, PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. announced that all police units in the province and neighboring areas have been placed on heightened alert to prevent potential retaliatory attacks from the extremist organization.

Details of the Deadly Clash and Police Operations

This directive was released after an encounter occurred during a police operation aimed at apprehending two high-ranking DI-MG officials, identified only by their aliases "Usman" and "Muslih." According to authorities, the suspects, believed to be leaders and sub-leaders of the group, opened fire as law enforcement approached their hideout, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire. The two suspects were among the 10 fatalities reported by the police.

During the operation, various weapons were seized, including M16 rifles, M4 rifles, an M1 Garand rifle, a .38 caliber revolver, a hand grenade, and equipment used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Nartatez emphasized that local police units continue to conduct joint operations with the military to pursue remaining group members and prevent further unrest.

Assurances and Public Safety Measures

Despite the possibility of retaliation, the PNP chief assured the public that authorities remain in control of the security situation in the province. He explained that the heightened alert status is a precautionary measure designed to protect civilians. Residents were also urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to local authorities.

"All our units in Lanao del Sur and nearby areas are on alert and are in constant coordination with our military counterparts in the conduct of operations to crush the remaining threat and eventually bring peace and development to the local communities," stated Nartatez. "The PNP will remain relentless in ensuring peace and order in every community. I call on the public to remain calm but vigilant."

The DI-Maute Group, which has been linked to previous extremist activities in Mindanao, remains a focal point of ongoing security operations as the government strives to dismantle their remaining network entirely.
