Comelec Eyes Earlier COC Filing for 2028 Elections in September 2027
Comelec Eyes September 2027 COC Filing for 2028 Polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is planning to adjust the schedule for filing Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the May 2028 national elections, moving it a month earlier than the traditional period. Comelec Chairman George Garcia announced this proposal during a media forum in Manila, emphasizing the need for additional time to address potential questions regarding the eligibility and qualifications of candidates.

Earlier Filing to Resolve Cases Quickly

Garcia stated that instead of the usual COC filing in October 2027, the commission is considering holding it in September 2027. This shift aims to ensure that all cases, particularly those involving presidential and vice-presidential candidates, are resolved before November 2027. "If the filing is in September 2027, what we want is that before November 2027, we should have finished the cases, especially of those running for president, vice president. This is so there will be no more doubts and the issues don't hang around," he explained.

Comelec Ready to Receive Sara Duterte's COC

Regarding Vice President Sara Duterte, Garcia confirmed that the Comelec is prepared to accept her COC regardless of her impeachment status. He stressed the commission's neutrality amid political developments. "The Comelec doesn't want to be caught in this political process. For us, whoever will file their candidacies, we shall receive it," Garcia said. He added, "For the 2028 elections, we will accept that. If there are grounds to disqualify them, then we will re-resolve them. That's how we will show the impartiality of Comelec."

Background on Duterte's Impeachment

In February, Duterte announced her intention to run for president in the 2028 elections. However, the House of Representatives voted to impeach her last week over allegations of unexplained wealth, misuse of state funds, and threats against President Bongbong Marcos Jr. The Senate convened as an impeachment court on Monday afternoon to begin the trial. If convicted, impeachment could lead to removal from office and disqualification from holding public office in the future.
