In a significant military operation coinciding with the national commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor), government forces engaged and neutralized two New People's Army (NPA) rebels in South Cotabato on Thursday, April 9, 2026. The clash resulted in the deaths of a high-ranking NPA leader and a follower, marking a notable achievement for the Philippine military.
Details of the Encounter
Brigadier General Michael Santos, commander of the 603rd Infantry Brigade, confirmed the incident, which occurred in Laconon village, T'boli, South Cotabato. The troops launched a targeted operation that led to a firefight with the rebel group. Santos identified the slain NPA leader as Anthony Narvasa, known by the alias Magaw, who served as the secretary of the Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR).
The other casualty was Rosa Kian, alias Mutya, a member of Team 1, Squad 2 of the Region Operations Command (ROC) within the FSMR. According to Santos, Magaw faced multiple criminal charges, including attempted homicide, murder, and attempted murder, highlighting his notorious status within the NPA.
Military Success and Recoveries
No casualties were reported among government forces during the clash, underscoring the effectiveness of the operation. The troops successfully recovered four M16 rifles and one R4 rifle from the scene, which will aid in further investigations and disarmament efforts.
Santos emphasized that this operation demonstrates the ongoing operational prowess of the military against insurgent groups. He noted that Magaw is the third FSMR secretary neutralized by the 603rd Infantry Brigade in just over four years, following the takedowns of aliases Bobo in December 2022 and Rafa in June 2025.
Strategic Impact and Commendations
The timing of this operation, on the Day of Valor, was highlighted by Santos as symbolic of the troops' bravery and dedication. He commended the soldiers for their act of valor, stating, "This significant accomplishment is our gift to the people of South Cotabato. An NPA leader neutralized means a lot more to them, who are living under the fear of terrorism, extortion, and threats."
Santos further explained that after the previous neutralizations, the FSMR attempted to reorganize by installing Magaw as its new secretary in the last quarter of 2025. However, his tenure was short-lived, as he was neutralized just three months later, showcasing the military's persistent efforts to dismantle the group's leadership structure.
Post-Operation Procedures
The remains of the neutralized NPA rebels are currently in the custody of the operating troops. Santos assured that they will be handled in accordance with established military and legal procedures, ensuring proper protocols are followed for identification and next steps.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in regions affected by insurgency and the government's commitment to maintaining security and order. The recovery of weapons and the neutralization of key figures are seen as critical steps in reducing the NPA's operational capabilities in Mindanao.
