In a concerted effort to ensure the safety and convenience of millions of Filipinos traveling during the Holy Week, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla has issued a firm directive to all local government units (LGUs). The call to action was made during an inter-agency press conference held at Camp Crame on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
Clear Roads for Uninterrupted Travel
Secretary Remulla emphasized the critical need for LGUs to take proactive measures in removing any and all obstructions from major thoroughfares within their jurisdictions. "I am calling on all local government units to do your part in making all our major thoroughfares obstruction-free. This is our obligation to our citizens and to all travelers," Remulla stated unequivocally. The goal is to guarantee a smooth and efficient flow of traffic amidst the anticipated surge of vehicles and commuters during the Semana Santa period.
Inter-Agency Collaboration for Public Safety
The press conference saw Secretary Remulla joined by key officials from other government agencies, including Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon, and Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. This gathering underscored a unified front in addressing the logistical challenges of the Holy Week exodus.
Remulla highlighted that the DILG, DOTr, DPWH, and PNP are working in close coordination to ensure safe and seamless travel for all Filipinos during the holiday season. The collaborative approach aims to mitigate traffic congestion and enhance overall public safety on the roads.
DPWH Halts Road Projects Temporarily
In a significant move to alleviate potential bottlenecks, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon announced the suspension of all ongoing road construction projects throughout the Holy Week celebrations. Dizon explained the rationale behind this decision, noting, "What's important is that during this Holy Week, there should be no one-way traffic situations. That is our mandate because that really slows down traffic. When it becomes one-way, it leads to stop-and-go traffic, especially during Holy Week, where traffic can stretch for kilometers. This results in excessive gasoline consumption and additional travel time for motorists."
He further elaborated on the benefits of this suspension, stating, "Less time on the roads means less fuel consumption and fewer expenses for our fellow citizens." This measure is expected to significantly reduce travel delays and financial burdens on commuters, contributing to a more pleasant and cost-effective journey during the religious observance.
The combined efforts of these government agencies reflect a comprehensive strategy to manage the annual Holy Week migration efficiently. By prioritizing road clearance and project suspensions, authorities aim to minimize disruptions and ensure that Filipinos can travel safely and without undue hardship during this important time of year.
