Iloilo City Government Announces Fuel Subsidy Program for Jeepney Drivers
The Iloilo City Government is set to implement a fuel subsidy program aimed at providing relief to public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers and operators, with distribution scheduled for April 11 and 12, 2026. This initiative targets approximately 1,600 beneficiaries, selected from a masterlist of 1,782 jeepney units registered with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Western Visayas (LTFRB 6).
Addressing Rising Fuel Costs
In an official statement, the City Government emphasized its commitment to supporting the transport sector amidst escalating petroleum prices. "We continue to look for ways to mitigate the impact of rising petroleum products prices on our transport sector," the statement read. "This initiative is part of our commitment to support our drivers and ensure they continue to serve the public." The program is designed to offer immediate assistance to drivers grappling with the financial strain of increased fuel costs, thereby helping to stabilize transportation services across the city.
Distribution Details and Requirements
Fuel distribution will take place at designated gasoline stations assigned to each route of participating cooperatives, operating from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the specified dates. To ensure the subsidy reaches intended recipients, the City Government has implemented a strict "one unit, one driver" policy. Only drivers officially assigned to a jeepney unit are permitted to claim the subsidy, with no authorizations allowed.
Drivers must present their original driver's license to receive fuel coupons. During the actual distribution, they are required to bring:
- Original driver's license
- One photocopy with three original specimen signatures
- Extra containers in case fuel exceeds their PUJ tank capacity
Broader Impact and Goals
This fuel subsidy program is a key component of the City Government's ongoing efforts to cushion the economic impact of volatile fuel prices on the transport sector. By providing direct support to drivers, the initiative aims to maintain uninterrupted public service for commuters and support the daily operations of jeepney drivers. The program is expected to not only alleviate financial burdens but also contribute to the overall stability of transportation networks in Iloilo City, ensuring reliable mobility for residents.
