Authorities in Lamitan City, Basilan province, have initiated a major campaign targeting disruptive motorcycle exhaust systems as part of a broader push for a secure and orderly holiday season. Mayor Roderick Furigay made a direct appeal to residents on Friday, December 26, 2025, for full cooperation with local law enforcement.
Mayor Calls for Collective Community Effort
In his statement, Mayor Roderick Furigay emphasized that ensuring a safe, peaceful, and orderly festive period is a shared responsibility. He highlighted that government efforts require active participation from every Lamiteño to be truly effective.
"Our police force is working diligently to implement critical initiatives like Oplan Maiingay na Tambutso, regulate the use of paputok (fireworks), and strengthen overall security across our city," Furigay stated. He specifically called on residents to adhere to rules on motorcycle modifications, avoid illegal firecrackers, and report any suspicious activities immediately.
Police Ramp Up Security Measures
Police Lieutenant Colonel Elmer Solon, the city's police chief, outlined the concrete steps being taken. The Lamitan City Police Office has begun intensifying checkpoints and increasing patrols, especially in areas with high traffic volume.
Solon confirmed that they are also coordinating closely with the Bureau of Fire Protection, health responders, and local government units to form a comprehensive emergency response network. He encouraged citizens to reach out to their village officials or visit the police for any safety-related concerns.
Grassroots Participation is Key
Beyond enforcement, Mayor Furigay advocated for community-led action. He urged Lamiteños to take part in information campaigns and work with barangay officials to spread awareness about holiday safety within their own neighborhoods.
"Let us all do our part to protect our families, our neighbors, and our community," the mayor added, expressing hope that through unity, the season would bring joy and peace to every home in Lamitan City.
