San Carlos Bishop Gerardo Alminaza has called on senators to restore dignity, decency, and integrity in public service after describing recent events in the Upper House as alarming and disappointing.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 26, Bishop Alminaza criticized the nearly two-hour Senate debate over a video presented by Senator Imee Marcos, saying it could have been concluded in just ten minutes. According to the bishop, the time should have been devoted to discussing more pressing issues faced by ordinary Filipinos such as poverty, hunger, unemployment, rising prices, education, and healthcare.
He emphasized that the Senate is an institution entrusted by the people and should not be used as a stage for personal bickering and politics. He lamented that at a time when many Filipinos are suffering, some lawmakers seem to prioritize political interests over the welfare of the people.
Alminaza also urged senators to prioritize the people and use their power and time for the benefit of the poor and marginalized sectors of society.
