In a dramatic turn of events, the man accused of gunning down a respected Cebu City police officer has voluntarily surrendered to authorities, ending an intensive manhunt that gripped the community.
The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Niño Rey Ybañez Alegre, walked into the Parian Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by his legal counsel and barangay officials. His surrender comes just days after the tragic shooting death of Police Executive Master Sergeant Adonis Dumpit, a veteran officer with nearly three decades of service.
The Fateful Encounter
According to police reports, the incident unfolded last Sunday when Dumpit responded to a commotion near a local store in Barangay Parian. The confrontation turned deadly when Alegre allegedly opened fire, striking the officer multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Janette Rafter, chief of the Cebu City Police Office, confirmed that Dumpit was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. "We lost a dedicated public servant who was nearing retirement after 29 years of honorable service," Rafter stated during a press briefing.

Authorities believe mounting pressure from both law enforcement and the local community played a crucial role in Alegre's decision to surrender.
