Central Visayas Records Major Crime Decrease During 2026 Holy Week Observance
The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 has announced a significant decline in major incidents across Central Visayas during the observance of Semana Santa, or Holy Week, this year. According to official data, the region experienced a peaceful period with no major recorded incidents, marking a positive trend in public safety.
Substantial Reduction in Overall Crime Rates
Police authorities revealed that total crime incidents in Central Visayas decreased by 11.32 percent during the period from March 29 to April 5, 2026. Comparative data from PRO 7 shows a notable improvement in peace and order, with Total Crime Incidents dropping from 689 cases in 2025 to 611 cases in 2026.
Sharp Decline in Index Crimes and Vehicular Accidents
The Eight Focus Crimes, which include serious offenses such as murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, and carnapping of vehicles and motorcycles, saw a dramatic reduction of 32.65 percent. Cases fell from 49 in 2025 to just 33 in 2026. Vehicular accidents recorded the most substantial decrease, plummeting by 60.58 percent from 312 cases to 123 cases.
Effective Police Measures and Strategies
Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, chief of PRO 7, attributed the success to intensified police visibility, preventive patrols, strategic security deployments, and efficient traffic management. These proactive measures have proven effective in maintaining order during the busy Holy Week period.
Increase in Non-Index Crimes: A Positive Indicator
While serious crimes decreased, Non-Index Crimes rose by 38.72 percent, from 328 cases to 455 cases. Authorities view this as a positive sign, indicating heightened police operations and arrests related to illegal drugs, illegal gambling, and other violations of special laws. This increase reflects more active law enforcement efforts rather than a surge in criminal activity.
Commitment to Sustained Peace and Community Partnership
PRO 7 has pledged to continue collaborating with local government units (LGUs) and the community to uphold peace and security throughout Central Visayas, even beyond the Lenten season. General Maranan expressed pride in the dedication of police personnel, emphasizing their ongoing commitment to public safety.
The successful crime reduction during Holy Week 2026 underscores the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement and the public in fostering a safer environment for all residents and visitors in the region.
