DSWD Delivers Additional Support to Family of Child Who Penned Letter to President Marcos Jr.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has once again extended crucial assistance to the family of an 11-year-old girl who wrote a heartfelt letter to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The young girl detailed alleged abuse and harassment that she and other children reportedly experienced from a barangay official within their community.
Immediate Action Taken Following Presidential Directive
In a statement released on Monday, the agency confirmed that DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian promptly acted on the child's request, following direct orders from President Marcos Jr. This swift response underscores the government's commitment to addressing urgent social welfare concerns and protecting vulnerable citizens.
On-Site Assessment and Initial Relief Efforts
DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao reported that the DSWD Field Office 5 – Bicol Region conducted an on-site assessment at the Redeemer Homeless Mission. This shelter serves as a temporary residence for families impacted by poverty and various calamities. During the assessment, five families residing at the non-profit mission received P10,000 each as cash relief assistance. The family of the girl who wrote the letter was among those who benefited from this immediate financial support.
Psychosocial Support for Affected Children
In addition to monetary aid, the DSWD provided psychosocial first aid (PFA) to three other children living at the mission. This intervention aims to address the emotional and psychological trauma experienced by the young victims, ensuring they receive the necessary care to heal and recover from their distressing experiences.
Identified Gaps and Ongoing Commitments
The assessment revealed significant gaps in access to basic services, sustainable livelihoods, and robust protection mechanisms. These deficiencies hinder the safety and proper development of children in the community. To address these issues, the DSWD has pledged to conduct home visits this week for the remaining children and their families. Furthermore, the agency will collaborate with the Bicol Regional Hospital and Medical Center to dispatch a licensed psychologist, offering additional psychosocial support services to those in need.
Future Assistance Plans
Two families who have not yet received any aid are scheduled to receive cash relief assistance this week. This ongoing effort highlights the DSWD's dedication to ensuring that all affected individuals receive the support they require to rebuild their lives and secure a safer future for their children.
