Free SeaBus Service Launches to Aid Commuters Amid Fuel Price Surge

Residents traveling between Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City can now enjoy complimentary rides on the SeaBus, a new initiative designed to alleviate the financial strain caused by escalating fuel prices. This public assistance program, spearheaded by local government officials, aims to support daily commuters facing economic challenges.

Mayor Ouano Announces Public-Focused Initiative

Mayor Thadeo Jovito Ouano of Mandaue City has confirmed that the SeaBus service operates as a vital public aid, particularly benefiting Mandauehanons and Oponganons. The service runs between Gothong Wharf in Mandaue City and Muelle Osmeña Wharf in Lapu-Lapu City, providing a convenient and cost-effective transportation alternative.

Originally, shipping executive Calvin Gothong proposed a fare of P35 per ride, but after discussions with the Mandaue city government, this was negotiated down to P20. In a surprising turn, Gothong ultimately decided to offer the service entirely free of charge, demonstrating a commitment to community welfare.

Operational Details and Community Impact

Two SeaBus vessels have been deployed as shuttle services, enabling passengers to travel between the two cities without any cost. This move is expected to significantly ease the burden on locals who rely on inter-city travel for work, education, and other daily activities.

The initiative highlights a collaborative effort between the private sector and local government to address pressing economic issues, such as the recent fuel price hikes that have impacted household budgets across the region. By providing free transportation, the program not only reduces commuting expenses but also promotes sustainable mobility options.

Officials hope this service will foster greater connectivity and economic resilience in the area, setting a precedent for future public-private partnerships aimed at enhancing community well-being.
