Several leaders of the House of Representatives have denied allegations made by Senator Imee Marcos that some lawmakers are pushing for a constituent assembly (Con Ass) to amend the 1987 Constitution and extend the term of elected officials.
House Officials Respond
House Senior Deputy Speaker Ferdinand Hernandez stated that the House is focused on its legislative duties and has no comment on what he described as political speculation. Meanwhile, House Deputy Speaker Janette Garin said that there has been no discussion in their meetings regarding a no-election scenario or term extension. She also denied that such a scenario was used as a quid pro quo for support in the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Background of the Allegations
In her privilege speech in the Senate, Senator Marcos claimed there were moves for charter change, extending the term of officials until 2031, and canceling the 2028 presidential elections. The House leaders have categorically refuted these claims, emphasizing their commitment to regular legislative processes.
