Lapu-Lapu City Declares State of Preparedness Amid Middle East Conflict Concerns
Lapu-Lapu City Prepares for Oil Price Hike from Middle East Conflict

In response to escalating tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on global oil prices, the Lapu-Lapu City Government has officially declared a "State of Preparedness." This proactive move aims to safeguard local operations and mitigate economic disruptions as international conflicts threaten to drive fuel costs higher.

Mayor Chan's Directive for Government Efficiency

Through Memorandum No. 2026-024, issued on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" Chan has mandated all department heads and office leaders to implement immediate austerity measures. The goal is to ensure the effectiveness and continuity of city government functions during this period of uncertainty.

In an interview on Thursday, March 5, Mayor Chan emphasized that these cost-saving steps are a precautionary response to anticipated oil price surges. She projected that fuel prices could rise by P5 to P10 per liter in the coming weeks, a significant increase that could strain both public and private budgets.

Resident Advisory on Conservation Practices

Mayor Chan has urged residents to adopt practical conservation methods in their daily lives. Recommendations include planning trips efficiently to reduce unnecessary travel and conserving resources such as water, electricity, and gasoline. By embracing these habits, the community can collectively cushion the economic impact of rising oil prices.

Specific Austerity Measures Implemented

The City Hall has rolled out a comprehensive set of measures to lead by example in resource management. Key actions include:

  • Limiting the use of government vehicles to essential trips only.
  • Encouraging ride-sharing among employees to minimize fuel consumption.
  • Coordinating travel routes to avoid duplication and optimize efficiency.

Additionally, operational adjustments have been made to energy usage within government facilities. Air-conditioning units will operate strictly from 7:45 AM to 4:45 PM, switching to fan mode during lunch breaks. Overtime work and lighting usage are also being restricted to further reduce energy costs.

These initiatives underscore Lapu-Lapu City's commitment to resilience and sustainability in the face of global challenges, ensuring that public services remain uninterrupted while promoting community-wide preparedness.
