Remulla Declares Marcos Administration's Anti-Drug Efforts More Effective Than Predecessor's
Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla has publicly praised the current administration's approach to combating illegal drugs, stating it surpasses the effectiveness of the previous government's controversial war on drugs. In a recent statement, Remulla highlighted key differences between the two campaigns, emphasizing a shift towards legal compliance and collaborative enforcement.
Contrasting Strategies: Lawful Enforcement vs. Past Violence
Remulla pointed out that during the tenure of former President Rodrigo Duterte, the war on drugs resulted in numerous casualties, yet failed to curb the proliferation of illegal substances. He contrasted this with the current strategy under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., which he claims strictly follows the law and has avoided any incidents of extrajudicial killings. This adherence to legal protocols, according to Remulla, marks a significant improvement in both human rights and operational outcomes.
Enhanced Collaboration Leads to Widespread Arrests
The secretary attributed the success of the ongoing campaign to the strengthened cooperation between law enforcement agencies, specifically the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). This partnership has facilitated large-scale arrests targeting the masterminds behind drug operations, rather than focusing solely on low-level offenders. Remulla emphasized that this coordinated effort is yielding tangible results in dismantling drug networks across the country.
He further elaborated that the Marcos administration's method prioritizes intelligence-led operations and community engagement, aiming to address the root causes of drug abuse while ensuring justice is served through proper legal channels. This approach, he argued, not only enhances public safety but also restores trust in governmental institutions.
Remulla's comments come amid ongoing debates about the efficacy and ethics of anti-drug policies in the Philippines. By framing the current campaign as more successful and lawful, he seeks to bolster public support for the administration's initiatives while distancing them from the criticisms faced by the previous government's tactics.
