Philippines Expands Healthcare Access for Veterans with New Regional Hospital Wards
The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) has announced a significant initiative to improve medical services for the nation's veterans. In a move aimed at honoring their sacrifices, PVAO is coordinating with the Department of Health (DOH) to establish dedicated veterans' wards in regional hospitals across the Philippines.
Enhancing Services Beyond the Veterans Memorial Medical Center
According to PVAO Deputy Administrator and Assistant Secretary Restituto Aguilar, these new facilities will complement the existing services provided by the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City. Aguilar emphasized that this measure is particularly beneficial for veterans residing in provinces who face challenges in traveling to the VMMC for assistance.
In a television interview, Aguilar explained, "What we did, while there is still no VMMC in other areas and major islands, we coordinated with the DOH so we can set up veterans’ wards in their regional hospitals." This strategic approach aims to bridge the healthcare gap for veterans in remote regions.
Progress and Budget Details
The project is already underway, with six veterans' wards established out of a planned total of 32. Each ward is allocated a budget of PHP25 million, which covers essential amenities such as beds and other medical equipment. This investment underscores the government's commitment to providing quality healthcare for veterans.
Commemoration of Valor and Legacy
This initiative coincides with the recent commemoration of the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) and Philippine Veterans’ Week. The Philippine Army marked the occasion with a Sunrise Ceremony and wreath-laying at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. The theme for this year's celebration, "Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi" (Bravery of Heroes, Legacy to Generations), highlights the enduring impact of veterans' service on future generations.
The expansion of veterans' wards represents a tangible step in honoring this legacy, ensuring that those who defended the nation receive the care and recognition they deserve.
