PNP Urges Summer Safety as Road Crashes Decline, Drowning Incidents Rise
PNP: Summer Road Crashes Down, Drowning Up; Safety Reminders Issued

PNP Highlights Summer Safety Amid Mixed Accident Trends

As summer intensifies across the Philippines, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is urging the public to prioritize safety during vacations to prevent common seasonal hazards like road accidents and drowning. In a recent briefing, PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño provided updated statistics, revealing a notable decline in road crashes but a concerning rise in water-related incidents.

Road Accident Data Shows Improvement

According to Tuaño, road crash incidents decreased significantly from 43,309 cases recorded between April and May 2024 to 31,251 in the same period in 2025, marking a 27.8 percent reduction. He attributed this positive trend to enhanced coordination among government agencies and consistent public advisories on travel safety. "Our ongoing coordination with local governments is crucial," Tuaño explained. "It's a collective effort, including inspections on roads, hubs, and terminals, that helps maintain safety."

Analysis of the 2025 data identified key factors contributing to accidents:

  • Intoxicated drivers
  • Over-fatigued motorists
  • Excessively long drives, particularly during holiday travel

Tuaño reiterated the PNP's call for drivers to rest when tired and avoid operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Of the 31,251 incidents in 2025, 19,374 involved motor vehicles with more than four wheels, while 11,877 involved motorcycles. Despite the overall drop in incidents, fatalities increased to 919 during the 2025 summer, with Central Luzon (118 deaths), Calabarzon (111), and Northern Mindanao (74) being the most affected regions.

Drowning Incidents Surge Alarmingly

In contrast to road safety improvements, drowning incidents saw a sharp 68 percent increase, rising from 90 cases in summer 2024 to 151 in 2025. Tragically, 141 of these resulted in deaths, with only seven leading to injuries. PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized the need for vigilance, especially for families engaging in water activities. "Parents should always supervise their children," he stated. "Swim only in designated areas, check for lifeguards, wear life vests, and avoid risky behaviors like diving in shallow water or swimming alone."

Nartatez added that simple precautions can prevent accidents and save lives, urging everyone to look out for one another during the season.

Outlook for 2026 Summer Travel

Looking ahead to the 2026 summer exodus, Tuaño noted that initial feedback from regional offices indicates a potential decrease in road travelers due to rising fuel prices. "We expect that as the number of road users decreases, our accident figures will also decline," he said. This projection suggests that economic factors may further influence safety outcomes, though the PNP continues to stress proactive measures to mitigate risks.

The PNP's dual focus on road and water safety underscores the importance of responsible behavior during summer vacations. By heeding these reminders, the public can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable season for all.
