Ombudsman Remulla Issues Stern Ultimatum to House Secretary General Over SALN Submission

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin 'Boying' Remulla has delivered a firm ultimatum to House of Representatives Secretary General Cheloy Garafil, demanding strict adherence to a recently issued directive. This development stems from the Office of the Ombudsman's issuance of a subpoena to the House chamber, aimed at obtaining crucial documents necessary for an ongoing investigation.

Specific Demand for Financial Disclosure

At the heart of this matter is the Ombudsman's specific request for a copy of the Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) belonging to House Deputy Secretary General Sofonias Gabonada Jr. Ombudsman Remulla has issued a clear warning to Secretary General Garafil, urging him to ensure full compliance with the instructions detailed in the subpoena. Failure to do so, according to Remulla, will result in plans to suspend Garafil from his position, with a bold declaration that they will test the legal system if required.

The office of Secretary General Garafil has been given until this week to provide the documents requested by the Ombudsman. "And this week, if we do not receive the SALN we initially requested, I will suspend him from his position," stated Ombudsman Jesus Remulla. "We will challenge our legal system if that is what is necessary," he added, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Allegations of Non-Compliance and Clarifications

These statements follow Ombudsman Remulla's assertion that the office of the House Secretary General has been ignoring the subpoena issued by his office. However, Secretary General Garafil has clarified that their office respects the Office of the Ombudsman and has no intention of showing disrespect or avoiding communication from the oversight body.

Despite this, Assistant Ombudsman Atty. Mico Clavano has confirmed that the issued subpoena has been received and served to the relevant office. The Ombudsman believes that the official in question, whose SALN record is under scrutiny, plays a significant role in the investigation being conducted.

This standoff highlights ongoing tensions between governmental bodies over transparency and accountability, with the Ombudsman taking a firm stance to enforce compliance with legal procedures. The outcome of this ultimatum could set a precedent for future interactions between these offices, underscoring the importance of document submission in investigative processes.
