Romualdez Camp Expresses Confidence in Ombudsman's Evidence-Based Approach
The legal team representing former House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez has firmly declared his innocence regarding allegations linked to anomalous flood control projects. This statement comes in response to Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla's announcement that prosecutors are preparing to file a plunder case against Romualdez.
Legal Defense Highlights Lack of Evidence
According to Atty. Ade Fajardo, Romualdez's attorney, there is currently no evidence connecting Romualdez to the so-called "ghost" or substandard projects. Fajardo emphasized that no formal case has been filed yet, no probable cause has been established, and no final decision on liability has been reached. He stressed that the allegations remain unsubstantiated at this stage.
Camp Asserts Trust in Due Process
Romualdez's camp expressed confidence that the Office of the Ombudsman will base any actions strictly on evidence and due process, rather than political considerations. They highlighted their belief in the integrity of the legal system to handle the matter fairly and transparently.
Commitment to Cooperation
In a show of willingness to engage with the process, the camp assured that Romualdez will fully cooperate with any formal investigation. They reiterated his stance of transparency and readiness to address the allegations through proper legal channels.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions in political accountability, with Romualdez's team positioning the issue as a test of judicial impartiality versus potential political influence.
