Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Edgardo "Sonny" Angara has been confirmed as the distinguished guest of honor for the upcoming 505th anniversary commemoration of the historic Victory at Mactan. The significant event is scheduled to take place on April 27, 2026, in Lapu-Lapu City.
Official Announcement by City Mayor
The prestigious invitation was formally announced by Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King Chan during the regular flag-raising ceremony at the city government headquarters on Monday, April 6, 2026. Mayor Chan made the declaration public, highlighting Secretary Angara's role in the anniversary celebrations.
Changes to Traditional Celebrations
In her announcement, Mayor Chan also revealed that the traditional Sadsad sa Kadaugan (Victory Dance) will not proceed this year. This decision forms part of the city's ongoing efforts to conserve resources and optimize budgetary allocations for public events.
Despite this adjustment, Mayor Chan provided assurances that the historical reenactment of the legendary Battle of Mactan will continue as planned. The battle reenactment remains a cornerstone of the anniversary festivities, preserving the cultural and historical significance of the event for both residents and visitors.
Return of Popular Performers
Adding to the continuity of the celebrations, Mayor Chan confirmed that the popular vlogging couple Shaun Pelayo and Crissa "Habibi" Liaging will reprise their roles for the second consecutive year. Pelayo will once again portray Datu Lapulapu, while Liaging will return as Reyna Bulakna, bringing their dynamic performances to the historical narrative.
The involvement of this digital media duo reflects the city's innovative approach to engaging younger audiences and blending traditional commemorations with contemporary entertainment elements. Their participation has previously drawn significant attention and enhanced public interest in the historical event.
As preparations advance for the 505th anniversary, the combination of honored guests, historical reenactments, and modern performances promises to deliver a memorable celebration that honors Lapu-Lapu City's rich heritage while adapting to current practical considerations.
