The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) successfully brought festive joy and laughter to its Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center (AVRC) II in Central Visayas during a special Christmas celebration for trainees with disabilities. The heartwarming event took place on December 19, 2025, as part of the agency's annual holiday program for its non-residential facilities nationwide.
A Gathering of Joy and Hope
The center's covered court was filled with camaraderie, laughter, and hope as staff, trainees, and visitors came together to celebrate the true spirit of Christmas. The annual year-end gathering served as a meaningful occasion to express gratitude and recognize the achievements and efforts of everyone involved throughout the year. Happy faces were seen all around, highlighting the success of the event in fostering community and appreciation.
AVRC II stands as the sole non-residential DSWD facility in Central Visayas dedicated to serving persons with disabilities (PWDs). Its core mission is to function as a training center, offering free skills training and comprehensive vocational rehabilitation programs. The center aims to develop the knowledge, abilities, and confidence of its trainees, preparing them for independent living and active participation within their communities.
Festivities and Highlights of the Day
The celebration was packed with engaging activities that showcased the trainees' talents and promoted unity. The program featured various trainee presentations, interactive games, and bonding opportunities that amplified the warmth and cheer of the holiday season. Trainees proudly displayed their talents in singing and dancing, bringing energy to the venue.
Adding to the excitement were a dedicated comedy show and a popular street food corner, both thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees. Each trainee also received a special holiday gift package containing noche buena items, five kilograms of rice, and prizes won from the games, ensuring the festive spirit was felt tangibly.
Commitment to Vulnerable Sectors
DSWD Field Office 7 Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero emphasized the significance of such gatherings. She stated that the year-end event is a regular and meaningful tradition across all DSWD facilities. It provides a crucial opportunity for vulnerable sectors to experience the joy of the holiday season, complementing the interventions and services they receive year-round.
"It is a tradition that we Filipinos hold dear—a time for gathering during the holidays," Director Lucero said. "As a social welfare and development agency, we ensure that our residents and clients experience this joy, on top of the many interventions and services they have received throughout the year."
The successful activity was spearheaded by AVRC II Training Superintendent II Dr. Jera C. Armendariz, MD, MPH, MDM, together with DSWD Field Office 7 Regional Center Coordinator Rosemarie S. Salazar. The holiday festivities will continue in other DSWD residential facilities on December 25, 2025, and January 1, 2026, extending the season's cheer to more beneficiaries across the region.
