Lapu-Lapu and Talisay Cities Launch Free Ride Programs Amid Fuel Price Surge
Free Ride Programs Roll Out in Lapu-Lapu and Talisay Cities

In response to escalating fuel prices, the Lapu-Lapu City Government has launched a "Libreng Sakay" program, offering free rides to commuters from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan announced that the initiative will utilize existing coasters and remain operational as long as necessary to mitigate the economic strain on residents.

Designated Transport Routes to Enhance Accessibility

To streamline traffic and improve commuter access, two specific routes have been established. The first route spans from Mactan Economic Processing Zone 1 to Barangay Buaya, extending through Mactan to Marigondon Crossing and back. The second route runs from Barangay Basak to Marigondon Crossing, passing through Babag and Looc to the City Public Market in Barangay Poblacion and vice versa.

Proposed Terminal Fee Reductions and Subsidies

Mayor Chan has proposed temporary reductions in terminal fees for public utility vehicles to further alleviate the burden on drivers. Under the plan, fees would drop from P25 to P15 for vans-for-hire, P20 to P10 for jeepneys, and P10 to P5 for multicabs. This measure aims to lower operational costs and maintain affordable transportation for commuters.

The City Traffic Management System has identified public terminals in Barangays Basak, Pajac, Pajo, and Babag, with private terminals located in Mactan and Basak. The proposal is scheduled for deliberation at the City Council's regular session on Wednesday, April 1, with implementation targeted within the same month.

Additionally, the City Government plans to release fuel subsidies for tricycle drivers through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, along with local subsidies for sectors like pumpboat operators and fisherfolk with motorized bancas, who are not covered by national programs. To fund these initiatives, the SadSad Festival, traditionally part of the annual Kadaugan sa Mactan, will be canceled, with its resources redirected to support affected operators and communities.

Talisay City Joins Relief Efforts with Free Ride Program

Meanwhile, Talisay City is implementing its own free ride program starting Monday, March 30. Mayor Gerald Anthony "Samsam" Gullas Jr. stated that the initiative will deploy one City-owned bus and two vans per route to assist commuters traveling to workplaces and schools during the fuel crisis.

Gullas emphasized, "This free ride service is our way of helping Talisaynons during the fuel crisis, so it's easier for you to get to work or school without spending too much. We assure you that your journey will be safe and comfortable." The program will operate on two designated routes, limited to weekdays with no service on weekends and holidays.

These combined efforts by Lapu-Lapu and Talisay Cities highlight a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by soaring fuel prices, providing immediate relief to both drivers and commuters across the region.
