SM Foundation Upgrades Bacolod Health Stations for 15 Barangays

BACOLOD. In a significant boost to local healthcare infrastructure, SM Foundation Incorporated officially handed over two fully upgraded health stations to Bacolod City on March 26, 2026. The ceremonial turnover marks a pivotal step in expanding medical services for residents, with Mayor Greg Gasataya emphasizing health as a core program of the city.

Enhanced Healthcare for 15 Barangays

Mayor Gasataya expressed profound gratitude to SM Foundation for its collaborative efforts in renovating the Mabini and ETCS Health Stations. These facilities are strategically positioned to cater to 15 barangays, providing essential frontline services that include consultations, maternal and child care, immunizations, and treatment for minor illnesses. Gasataya highlighted that this partnership transcends mere collaboration, stating, "This goes beyond a simple partnership; it is more personal because you are assisting the people of Bacolod City in one of their most important needs, and that is our health."

Strategic Location and Future Plans

The mayor noted that the ETCS Health Station is situated near the proposed site for the Bagong Urgent Care and Ambulatory Service (Bucas) Center, alongside other health centers slated for construction in the next quarter. This alignment is expected to further amplify the city's health program, ensuring a more integrated and accessible network of care. Gasataya assured that the City Health Office (CHO) will meticulously maintain these facilities, underscoring the local government's commitment to sustainable healthcare improvements.

Expanding a National Network of Health Facilities

Connie Angeles, SMFI Executive Director for Health and Medical Programs, revealed that the newly upgraded stations are part of the foundation's expanding network of community health facilities. Nationwide, SM Foundation has now renovated 228 health centers, with these Bacolod additions anticipated to serve nearly 27,000 residents across multiple urban barangays. Angeles emphasized, "With the support of SM Foundation, and by enhancing these community-based facilities, we continue to help ensure that quality healthcare remains accessible, affordable, and responsive to the needs of Filipino families."

Operational Integration and Patient-Centered Upgrades

Both stations operate within a network of approximately 30 Barangay Health Stations under the Bacolod City Health Office, functioning as the first point of contact for patients and bringing healthcare closer to communities. City Health Officer Carmela Gensoli detailed the renovations, which were designed to elevate service delivery and patient experience. Interior enhancements include:

  • New LED lighting for improved visibility and energy efficiency
  • Modern appliances to support medical procedures
  • More comfortable, patient-centered furnishings
  • Layout improvements for efficient consultations and better patient flow

Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships

Gensoli praised the upgrade as a testament to robust public-private collaboration, noting, "Your generosity provides more than just medicines and equipment; it provides dignity and hope to every patient who walks through these corridors." Coinciding with her birthday, the turnover held special significance for Gensoli, who highlighted how the improved environment empowers healthcare workers to promote disease prevention and health education while fostering greater community trust.

Supporting National Health Programs

The renovations also facilitate expanded participation in PhilHealth's Yaman Ng Kalusugan Program (Yakap), particularly through enhanced electronic medical record enrollments. This technological advancement streamlines administrative processes and ensures more accurate patient data management, contributing to overall healthcare efficiency.

As Bacolod City continues to prioritize health services, this initiative by SM Foundation exemplifies how strategic partnerships can drive tangible improvements in community well-being, setting a precedent for future collaborations in the healthcare sector.
