University of the Visayas Green Lancers Claim Championship in Bulacao-Talisay Sinulag Cup
The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers emerged victorious in the recently concluded Bulacao-Talisay Sinulag Cup Inter-collegiate Invitational basketball tournament. They defeated the Benedicto College (BC) Cheetahs with a final score of 80-72 in the championship game held at the Bulacao Sports Complex in Talisay City on Thursday, February 5.
Dominant Performance Led by MVP Kent Ivo Salarda
Under the leadership of Kent Ivo Salarda, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, the Green Lancers entered the court with a strong determination to reclaim the title they had missed in the previous year. Their offense was sharp and effective from the start, allowing them to build a significant lead early in the game.
By the end of the first half, UV had established a commanding 50-27 advantage, putting them in a favorable position for what seemed like an easy victory. Salarda's standout performance was complemented by key contributions from his teammates, including Karl Hyden Cabulao with 12 points, AJ Sacayan and Ivan Clark Alsola each scoring 11 points, and Winston Bingil adding 10 points.
Benedicto College Cheetahs Mount a Fierce Rally
Despite the large deficit, the Benedicto College Cheetahs, coached by BJ Murillo, launched an impressive comeback in the fourth quarter. Players such as Jhon Loufred Diamante, Kenneth Babalcon, Serge Gabinez, and Vince Alfred Mananquil combined forces to stage a dramatic rally, threatening UV's lead in the final four minutes of the game.
This sudden surge by the Cheetahs tested the Green Lancers' resilience and strategy, creating a tense and exciting finish to the match.
Green Lancers Regroup to Secure the Win
Following a crucial timeout, the UV Green Lancers regrouped and refocused their efforts to withstand the Cheetahs' challenge. They managed to stabilize their play and secure the hard-fought victory, ensuring their triumph in the four-day competition.
The awarding ceremony was a highlight of the event, with Punong Barangay Banjo Abastillas and other councilors presenting the trophy to MVP Kent Ivo Salarda. This tournament served as one of the key activities leading up to the barangay Bulacao festival, organized under the leadership of Kapitan Banjo Abastillas.
In his remarks, Abastillas expressed gratitude to all supporters of the league, with special thanks extended to Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas for his involvement and backing. The successful event underscored the vibrant sports culture and community spirit in the area, celebrating athletic excellence and local festivities.
