Davao's 89th Araw ng Dabaw to Feature Paddling, Kayaking, and Dragon Boat Races

Clang Calolot of the Philippine Paddling Federation has officially announced the upcoming 89th Araw ng Davao water sports competition. The announcement was made during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum held at SM City Davao Annex on March 5, 2026, setting the stage for an exciting aquatic event.

Event Details and Venue

The shores of Kalayaan Beach Resort in Toril will transform into a vibrant paddling arena on March 29, 2026. This competition is a key part of the city's 89th Araw ng Dabaw celebration, organized by the Philippine Paddling Federation to showcase local athletic talent.

Calolot revealed that the event will feature three main categories: paddling, kayaking, and dragon boat racing. Athletes from across the Davao Region are expected to participate, making it a regional highlight for sports enthusiasts.

New Stand-Up Paddle Category Introduced

In a notable update, Calolot highlighted the introduction of a stand-up paddle (SUP) category for the first time this year. "What's new this year is the stand-up paddle category. It's our first time to introduce it, and we're excited to see paddlers try it," Calolot stated during the Davao Sportswriters Association Forum.

This addition aims to diversify the competition and attract a broader range of participants, adding an element of novelty and challenge to the traditional water sports lineup.

Competition Formats and Safety Measures

The kayak and stand-up paddle competitors will face a demanding 1,000-meter obstacle course along the Toril coastline, testing both endurance and balance. Meanwhile, dragon boat crews will compete in 10-man teams in a fast-paced 500-meter sprint time trial, promising thrilling races for spectators.

To ensure participant safety, organizers have implemented a strict "No life vest, no game" rule for all competitors. This measure underscores the federation's commitment to prioritizing athlete well-being during the event.

Registration and Prizes

Organizers have set the registration fee at P500, which includes the use of paddling equipment, paddles, and an official event shirt. This affordable fee is designed to encourage wider participation and make the competition accessible to more athletes.

Winners in each category will be rewarded with cash prizes, medals, and trophies. These incentives are part of the federation's ongoing efforts to promote paddling sports in Davao and recognize athletic excellence.

Organizational Support

The annual Araw ng Dabaw sports festival is presented by the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO), highlighting strong local government support for sports development in the region. This collaboration ensures a well-coordinated and successful event that celebrates Davao's rich sporting culture.
