CIT-U Baby Wildcats Make History, Win Cesafi 15-Under Title in Debut Season
In a stunning display of skill and determination, the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Baby Wildcats have etched their names into the annals of Cebu sports history. On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at the Cebu Coliseum, the team secured a decisive 55-39 victory over the defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers in Game 3 of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) 15-Under division finals. This win not only crowned them champions but also marked a remarkable achievement as they became the first rookie team in Cesafi's 25-year history to claim the title in their debut season.
A Defensive Masterclass Seals the Victory
Entering the league with high expectations, the Junior Wildcats did not merely participate; they dominated from the outset. Their journey culminated in a defensive masterclass that effectively silenced the seasoned UV squad. The game was a tense affair, with the Baby Lancers attempting a late rally in the third quarter, closing the gap to 28-36 with two consecutive three-pointers and a short jumper. However, this proved to be their final push as the Baby Wildcats regained control, employing a relentless full-court press that forced turnovers and secured their lead.
Key Players and Coaching Brilliance
Leading the charge for CIT-U was tournament standout Paul Desquitado, who earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. Desquitado orchestrated the offense with poise, scoring 16 points and delivering crucial baskets whenever UV threatened a comeback. His composure under pressure was instrumental in protecting the team's double-digit advantage in the final quarter. Supporting him were Ivan Geraldez, who contributed 10 points, and Bernard Alsola with nine points.
On the opposing side, the Baby Lancers were led by Mark Tundag with 12 points and Jared Go with eight points. A key factor in their loss was the limited performance of Skerl Basilisco, who was held to just four points. Under the mentorship of neophyte coaches Christian Floyd Taboada and Axel Rabaya, the Baby Wildcats showcased exceptional teamwork and strategy, sweeping the elimination and semifinals rounds to earn the top spot in the finals.
Overcoming Adversity in the Championship Series
The championship series was a rollercoaster ride for the Baby Wildcats. They started with a bang, defeating the Baby Lancers 59-45 in Game 1, only to suffer a setback in Game 2 with a 70-44 loss that halted their winning streak and put their campaign in jeopardy. However, in the decisive Game 3, the team shifted gears, demonstrating resilience and a renewed focus. Coach Taboada reflected on the turnaround, stating, "In Game 2, we were overwhelmed by their effort. So we reminded the players in Game 3 to give extra effort, pressure them, and execute our game plan." He added that their victory was a testament to divine will.
Ending a Long Championship Drought
This triumph holds profound significance for CIT-U, as it ends a 15-year championship drought in the Cesafi era. The last time the university won a title was in the 2009-2010 season, when they ruled the high school division led by Macmac Tallo, who at 15 years old became the youngest MVP in Cesafi history. By finishing their maiden season at the pinnacle of success, the 15U squad has not only brought home a trophy but also restored pride and hope to the CIT-U community, setting a new benchmark for future generations of athletes.
