EASL Future Champions Program Kicks Off with Major Cebu Tryouts
Almost 200 aspiring young basketball players from Cebu gathered for the historic first-ever East Asia Super League (EASL) Future Champions Cebu tryouts on Sunday, April 12, 2026. The event took place at the Cebu City Sports Institute (CCSI), marking a significant step in developing local talent on an international platform.
Program Aims to Nurture Youth Basketball Excellence
Led by Michael Olson, in collaboration with former Cebu-based professional player Joel Co, the EASL Future Champions program is designed to identify and cultivate young basketball talent in Cebu. The initiative specifically targets boys aged 15 and below, providing them with a unique opportunity to showcase their skills globally.
The tryouts were structured into four intensive sessions—two in the morning and two in the afternoon. From these sessions, coaches will carefully select 48 players who will undergo eight weeks of rigorous, intensive training. Following this training period, a final selection of 12 players will be made to form a Philippine all-star team.
International Competition and Development Opportunities
This elite team will travel to Hong Kong and Macau in July 2026 to compete in an international tournament, offering these young athletes invaluable exposure. Olson emphasized that bringing the program to Cebu was a strategic decision, driven by the city's renowned passion for basketball.
"I personally wanted to come to Cebu to see the youth players because I know there's a lot of youth talent here," Olson stated. "The passion here—the people of the Philippines—we know their love for basketball, but Cebu, I think, has another level of that love. I was so excited to come here and conduct this type of tryout and start our elite program."
Comprehensive Training and Future Prospects
Olson described the EASL Future Champions as a top-level training program that offers free opportunities for young athletes, removing financial barriers. "After the tryouts, the program will be composed of four teams with 12 players practicing together for eight weeks, playing against each other and against Macau and Hong Kong, and possibly international teams after that," he added.
He noted observing exceptional talent during the tryouts, particularly highlighting two standout players and praising the skills of 14-year-olds. Joel Co will assist in organizing the selected players into teams for the all-star-style tournament in Hong Kong, where they will face teams from Hong Kong and Macau.
Life-Changing Experiences and Support
Top performers may also secure opportunities for international exposure trips to Europe or Japan, further enhancing their development. "The overseas trip for these kids will be really good for them and their development—not just as athletes but in life. It's completely free. Who wouldn't want that?" Olson remarked.
"We're trying to make their dreams come true, and we're looking for the next EASL or NBA stars. We want to push them to be the best they can be," he concluded. The program enjoys strong support from the Cebu City Sports Commission, ensuring a solid foundation for these young athletes to thrive and potentially reach professional heights in basketball.
