Globe and Ayala Foundation Launch Project Pastil to Empower USM Student Leaders

Following the successful observance of Safer Internet Day 2026 in February, Globe Telecom, in strategic partnership with the Ayala Foundation, has officially launched Project Pastil at the University of Southern Mindanao in Kabacan, Cotabato Province. This groundbreaking initiative brings comprehensive digital responsibility education directly to students across Mindanao, addressing critical gaps in digital literacy and online safety awareness.

Nourishing Minds in Underserved Communities

The program derives its distinctive name from pastil, the simple yet nutritious rice meal that serves as a familiar staple for students throughout the Philippines. Just as pastil effectively nourishes the body, Project Pastil aims to intellectually "feed" young minds, particularly in underserved regions, by equipping them with essential digital literacy, ethical artificial intelligence awareness, and practical leadership skills to navigate the increasingly complex online world safely and responsibly.

Anchored on the powerful theme "Ako, Ikaw, Tayo: Konektado at Protektado Laban sa OSAEC at CSAEM," the program transforms the urgent call for collective action against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children into tangible, actionable support for students. This initiative empowers participants to actively build safer, more responsible digital communities within their academic and personal networks.

Strengthening Digital Inclusion at a Premier Institution

The University of Southern Mindanao, established in 1952 and granted full university status in 1978, stands as a premier public institution long recognized for its excellence in science, technology, agriculture, and industrial programs. Beyond its academic achievements, USM has consistently championed digital inclusion through various initiatives including hackathons, comprehensive ICT workshops, and youth leadership development programs.

The collaboration with Globe Telecom and the Ayeya Foundation significantly complements these existing efforts by providing students with hands-on, practical experience in navigating technology safely, ethically, and responsibly. This partnership represents a meaningful expansion of the university's commitment to preparing students for the digital age.

Comprehensive Digital Education and Practical Support

The Project Pastil launch prominently featured Globe's Digital Thumbprint Program, now celebrating its tenth anniversary of operation. This established program equips students with practical, applicable knowledge covering online safety protocols, data privacy best practices, cybersecurity fundamentals, and critical thinking skills, while placing special emphasis on the ethical use of artificial intelligence technologies.

Facilitated by Zandra Louise Daraug, Business Development Expert for North Cotabato, the inaugural session actively engaged forty student leaders and underserved learners, providing them with essential tools to utilize digital platforms safely and responsibly within both academic environments and broader community settings.

Tech-Driven Ambassador Program with Real-World Benefits

Project Pastil has been formally introduced as a new, tech-driven Globe Ambassador Program specifically designed for Mindanao. Selected students, recognized for their exceptional academic performance while facing significant financial constraints, received Globe SIM cards and pre-loved 5G smartphones pre-installed with essential applications including GlobeOne, GCash, and Globe Benta.

This innovative program offers structured, part-time opportunities that seamlessly combine real-world professional exposure with genuine income-generating potential, all while ensuring participating students continue to prioritize their academic studies and leadership responsibilities.

Leadership Perspectives on Digital Empowerment

Andrene Buctuan, Area Operations Head for North Cotabato and Maguindanao, emphasized: "Through the combined power of Globe DTP and Project Pastil, we aim to empower deserving student leaders with the capacity to use artificial intelligence responsibly while equipping them with practical skills and an entrepreneurial mindset. With structured incentives coupled with authentic real-world exposure, we help them build confidence, digital proficiency, and career readiness, while ensuring academics and leadership growth remain their absolute top priorities."

Kiss Ekong, Assistant Vice President for Territory Business, added: "Access to technology represents just the beginning. By equipping students with comprehensive knowledge and a strong sense of responsibility, we actively create safer online communities and open meaningful opportunities for inclusive economic growth. The impact generated by these empowered student leaders will positively ripple through their schools and communities, helping Mindanao thrive in the rapidly evolving digital age."

Maria Leida Donque, Office of Student Affairs Director at USM, shared: "We are profoundly thankful to Globe Telecom and Ayala Foundation for the transformative Project Pastil initiative. This program substantially helps students, especially those with special needs, by providing crucial livelihood support while simultaneously teaching responsibility and financial independence. As OSA Director, I am genuinely grateful for this meaningful partnership that empowers our students and supports their journey toward sustainable success."

A Holistic Approach to Digital Inclusion

Through its strategic partnership with the Ayala Foundation and the active engagement of Brigadang Ayala volunteers, Globe Telecom demonstrates that true digital inclusion extends far beyond mere connectivity. This initiative encompasses empowerment, responsibility, and genuine opportunity creation. Project Pastil reflects a deep commitment to preparing the next generation of Filipino leaders to navigate the digital world safely, ethically, and with unwavering confidence.
