CICC Issues Urgent Alert: Senior Citizens and Widowers at High Risk of 'Love Scams'

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has issued a stark warning to men, particularly focusing on senior citizens and widowers, urging heightened vigilance on social media platforms. This alert comes as new data reveals that these groups are now the primary targets of a surge in love scams across the Philippines.

Alarming Statistics Highlight Growing Threat

During a recent forum held in Quezon City, CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Aboy Paraiso disclosed concerning figures. From January 9 to February 6, 2026, the agency has documented 18 confirmed cases of love scams, coinciding with the onset of the heart-filled month of February. Investigations indicate that the majority of complaints received by the CICC originate from male victims who have fallen prey to these deceptive online schemes.

Deceptive Tactics Employed by Scammers

According to the CICC's findings, fraudsters are utilizing sophisticated methods to exploit their targets. They often adopt what are termed as seducer and escort archetypes to manipulate victims emotionally. Typically, scammers employ attractive but fabricated profile pictures to capture the attention of unsuspecting individuals. In some instances, they pose as escorts who agree to in-person meetings, only to request money upfront before disappearing entirely, leaving victims financially and emotionally devastated.

Essential Safety Measures and Recommendations

In response to this escalating threat, the CICC strongly advocates for the implementation of a zero-trust policy when engaging online. The agency emphasizes the critical importance of safeguarding personal information and advises against sharing any sensitive details with individuals met solely through digital platforms. Additionally, the public is encouraged to promptly report any suspicious transactions or interactions to the CICC hotline at 1326 to facilitate swift action and prevent further victimization.

This warning serves as a crucial reminder for all internet users, especially vulnerable demographics, to exercise caution and prioritize cybersecurity in an increasingly connected world.
